Sewing: How to Make a Humbug (Berlingot) Lavender Sachet/Pincushion

Hi ya everybody.

Well, you know how I have gone completely mad on French craft sites, I have found a great little craft number. I am in love with anything that is a little unusual, and these very elegant, I think.

What am I talking about?

Humbug (Berlingot) Sachets.  I have read countless French craft blogs in the past few days and many of them had ‘berlingots’.  These are really easy to make.  Mine took about ten minutes to make, and the next one will be about five.

Here is a great Tutorial to Make Humbug Sachets.  Once again, don’t be put off by the French.  The diagrams are really clear.

The top ten reasons that I love these so much:

  1. They are really cute and can be made with any sort of fabric and trimmings
  2. They have so many uses.
  3. You could make them a little bigger, add a zip to one side and there you have a bag.
  4. You could use them as pincushions if you stuff them with wadding.
  5. You could fill them with lavender (as I have done) and hang in your wardrobe.
  6. You could fill them with bath milk powder and use them in a bath.
  7. You can use all your scraps to make them.
  8. They would make unique and very cute gifts.
  9. You could make them as wedding favours (needs a little creative thinking but I can see it).
  10. You could make them out of paper and use them as lolly bags at a child’s party.

For this one, I actually cut up a $2 placemat bought from Spotlight.  The thickness has given this humbug a great structure to it.

Have fun and let me know if you make one!

Can you think of any other uses for the berlingot?

Mia

Stuffed with lavender, it can also be tumbled in the dryer to scent your clothing.
Or, stuff it with catnip for a cuter than average cat toy?

What awesome ideas. I love both of them and I think I will try both of these. Clothes smelling like lavender – couldn’t think of much better than this!
    Thanks for commenting.

I think I really will make some for my cat too – I save crinkly cellophane from packages whenever I find it, and think some of that stuffed in there, mixed with catnip, will make a more attractive toy for me to trip over and find in my bed. Instead of the loop, I can make a tail out of ribbon for him to chase.

And hey – I made crayon cookies yesterday. They were cool, though I liked them more than my Josie did. Can I please link to you when I post about that?

How adorable. They are so stylish. I love the idea of a little bag made in this shape. Maybe even an evening bag…

What great ideas. I bought a small zipper yesterday and I think I will buy another placemat and make a bag this afternoon. I just love these. And I love the ideas you all have. Cat toy, that is cool. My berlingot has become a lavender pincushion. I just couldn’t bare to put my first one in the cupboard and forget about it.

Thanks for your visit (Ribambelle). Your berlingot is beautiful!

These are adorable. I made 20 of them, filled with lavender from the Amish Market, to give as Christmas gifts. So easy to make. Thanks for the inspiration!
