I love a sunburnt country…Inspired by Australia

January 14th, 2010 by miabi

This year I am really looking forward and getting inspired for Australia Day on 26 January. I have never really made anything for it before but I am going to be making a few things and posting them in the next few days….. just for fun.

So many iconic places, animals, scenes to inspire….

And, because I have been crazy busy this week, working, planning a renovation, packing, we are having our giveaway on Monday.

This weekend should be interesting. I normally love the Aussie summer but there are some cruel temperatures. Sunday is predicted to reach 43 degrees – and the airconditioning is broken. I will have to find somewhere to hide out.

See ya Monday,
Mia

Denim Love

January 10th, 2010 by miabi

Hi, back from a very wonderful getaway weekend down south… couldn’t have been better…

Now onto the obsession of the moment…denim. I completely love all the denim trends around at the moment and Kate and I have been playing. We have been scouring thrift stores for cheap and cool jeans to play with. This way there is no guilt if our jeans turn out a little less than wonderful – whcih always happens when you start to play. Often there are a few attempts before you find something you love love love.

In this vein, I have a tutorial coming in the next few days on denim. But for now, some inspiring images which grabbed my attention….

We also have some sad news this week.  Darling Emma, my twin sister as all my readers know, is moving with her little family to Adelaide.  That is a few thousand kilometres from Perth.  This means a lot of time will be spent on Skype and some plane trips in between.  But it won’t be the same.  Hopefully she will be able to flick me pics of the things she is making.

Have a lovely day!

An Aussie Summer & A Happy Twenty Ten!

January 6th, 2010 by miabi

Love an Aussie Summer

Hi. Sorry I have not been around in the last few weeks. It is just so easy to get distracted in this beautiful city I live in. In summer our days are spent at the beach swimming, boogey boarding, sandcastle competitions and kite surfing (well, not me, yet, but maybe soon).

I’m sure you won’t hold any absence against me when you see where we live……..

2010….It’s so close…. how exciting!

December 30th, 2009 by miabi

Hi ya,

I am so excited for 2010. It will be great. I can feel it. I am feel of hope and positive resolutions.

I love spending the few days before the new year working out my goals for the next year. I usually have ten goals in the areas of Family, Health and Wellbeing, Career, Fun. But for the next year I have 12 goals. They are big…. and I continue to be a big dreamer.

My goals for this site are big for 2010. I can’t wait to tell you about the decisions we have made for it. We are going to grow bigger and better. We are also inviting sponsors to join us in 2010. I will post more about that in the new year. We are also writing another book. Yay! I am finally ready for this challenge again. And there are lots more fabulous surprises in store.

As you can see we are still playing around with a new look and will be doing so for the next few weeks. Please be patient with us while our renovations are under way.

I just wanted to take this time to say thank you for reading this site. I appreciate all the encouragement and feedback I have had for the past four years. It has been an amazing time for me. I want to wish you and your families a wonderful and hopeful new year….
Love Mia

PS Christmas photos are coming (hopefully tomorrow) and we have our great giveaway taking place in the first few days of 2010.

Happy Happy Holiday!

December 27th, 2009 by miabi

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday. I had an awesome holiday, went shopping, spent a lot of time at a day spa, more shopping, eating delicious food, room service… very decadent.

And Christmas was two days of family, food and fun. We had a feast both days, played croquet, swam, watched the eight kids having a ball, ate more….. there are photos to come.

And now it is back to blogging. We have big plans for 2010. We are spending this week doing some house cleaning on the site and re-designing. Please forgive any hiccups for the next few days.

And we have a New Year giveaway next week. I will update you later.

Have Fun!

Holiday Time & Christmas Inspiration

December 9th, 2009 by miabi

Hi everybody! Very early tomorrow morning (even before the sun has thought of coming up), I am off to the airport and away on my holiday. I am so excited! But I have so much to do… clean the house, put up the tree, get ready a room for mum, make sure the animals have enough food… oh and pack my bag…

Will be back in a week. Until then I will leave you with some gorgeous, inspiring images and of course, there are my Christmas tutorials to make.

Josh Goot

Josh Goot Interview
Note: Josh Goot’s bare feet – a True Aussie!

Wednesday: What a great evening. Dani & I went to the Fremantle Arts Centre where Josh Goot (read: gorgeous young very talented Australian designer) was being interviewed. After the show we got to meet him, ask him some questions about his designs and label and have some photos.

So many of us Aussies can relate to the things which have inspired Josh’s work and label. He said his inspirations are the sun (we are sunworshippers in Australia), the ocean and surfing (we also worship this), the huge sky, things he grew up with like skateboarding fashions, Aussie surfwear labels like Stussy and Billabong, and the pop colours of MTV.

Here are some of the pieces from his Spring/Summer 2010 Ready to Wear Collection…don’t drool too much…

After the interview we got to meet him and have a few pics with him. The progression of these photos makes me giggle. We got there in the end….

My head was spinning as I was driiving home. I started to think about the design process. I started thinking about the whole process: having the idea, or inspiration, starting to sketch in a notepad, developing those designs, taking them to the very outer reaches where they cannot be pushed any further. And this made me wish I were still designing and making silver jewellery… When I got home I started looking through my old sketch books. And I miss it so much.

I am now contemplating bringing out a small collection of rings, brooches and pendants in 2010. But it is just one in a million plans for the next 12 months.. so we will see…

Journals & The Christmas To-Do

December 1st, 2009 by miabi

As I said a few days ago, I am making covered journals for the eldest nieces and nephews. I am having a great time with them. I hope they will love keeping a journal as much as I do.
Being inspired by these lovely images…

The Christmas To-Do List is longer than my arm. And since I’m going for a quick overseas holiday next week I have to get on top of things around her.

TO-DO
Put up the tree & decorate (of course Mills can help with that one)
Make another Christmas wreath
Finish covering the journals
Finish the pompoms
Finish doing the tshirts (for all the other nieces and nephews)
Wrap all the presents and put them under the tree (hmm how to get Calvin not to eat the paper?)
Make some earrings
Make all my Christmas cards
Make Milly a Christmas dress
Make Christmas stockings
Do the etching – this is one of the most exciting things to do!

Am I kidding? I had better stop doing this and make a start on my projects… I aim to have the journals done to show you in the next few days and I have a cute little earring tutorial coming too.

December 1st, 2009 by miabi

OHC mix tape

2. White Christmas Dean Martin
3. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Jack Johnson
4. The Christmas Song Nat King Cole

4. Silent Night Elvis Presley
5. The Christmas Song Christina Aguilera
6. Winter Wonderland Darlene Love
7. If Every Day Was Christmas Elvis Presley

Nothing is better to me than making stuff and cooking at Christmas time with great music to listen to.

This reminds me of a Christmas years ago, spent almost alone in a lonely apartment overlooking Lac Leman, just outside Lausanne in Pully, Switzerland, with a view over the beautiful lake and to the twinkling lights of France on the other side, listening to Elvis Presley singing Christmas Songs, making profiteroles and drinking red wine….

That is the power of music…

I hope you had a wonderful start to the Christmas season. I know my little girl was very excited to eat her first lolly from the birdie advent calendar.

Enjoy!
Mia
PS Back with more Christmas loveliness tomorrow! If you get a chance to listen I reckon Alicia Keys concert on YouTube will be good.

Inspiration: Vintage Dress Patterns

November 22nd, 2009 by miabi

I got out my huge collection of vintage dress patterns today just to look at them. I love looking through them. They range from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. My favourites are the mini dress patterns from the 1960’s. I love the illustrations, I love the patterns themselves and have used many of them to sew with. I even love the smell. Unfortunately, my kitty Calvin thought it would be nice to eat them. . Here are a few from my collection….
